30 ns trr — why it matters for the switching stage
The 30 ns reverse recovery time is the key parameter that separates this part from a standard recovery rectifier. In a 100 kHz boost PFC or a forward-converter output stage, a slower diode would dump charge back into the switch at turn-off, raising junction temperature and EMI. At 990 mV forward drop at 8 A, the conduction loss per diode is roughly 7.9 W at full rated current — the TO-220 tab needs a thermal path to keep the junction under 150°C.
STMicroelectronics lists the STPR1620CT as obsolete. If a pin-compatible replacement is needed, a parametric search for a TO-220-3 common-cathode pair with ≥200 V Vr and ≤30 ns trr is the practical next step.
