Packaged in a through-hole TO-220-3, it targets medium-voltage offline switching applications — LED lighting drivers, auxiliary power supplies, and flyback converters where the 525 V Vdss provides adequate margin off a rectified 230 VAC line (typical peak ~375 V).
The STPLED524 is specified for a 10 V gate drive for rated Rds(on); the threshold voltage is 4.5 V maximum at 50 µA drain current, so a 5 V logic-level gate signal may not fully enhance the channel. A gate driver that swings to 10 V is recommended to achieve the 2.6 Ohm on-resistance. The 12 nC gate charge is low — a typical MCU GPIO driving through a small NPN transistor pair can switch it at tens of kHz without excessive drive loss. Input capacitance is 340 pF at 100 V Vds, which keeps the switching node capacitance low and helps reduce turn-on losses in a hard-switched converter.
Package and mounting — TO-220-3 through-hole
The supplier device package is TO-220. The tab is electrically connected to the drain — account for this in the PCB layout: either isolate the heatsink or use an insulating pad.
