800 V N-channel in a TO-220 — what it is for
It comes in a TO-220-3 through-hole package, which means you can sink it to a heatsink with a screw and a thermal pad — no reflow, no hot-air station, just a socket or a soldering iron and a mounting hole.
Conduction loss and drive budget
That is the conduction loss floor — at 1 A you drop 4.5 V across the channel, dissipating 4.5 W. With a 45 W power dissipation ceiling at the case, you have thermal headroom for pulsed operation above 1 A, but continuous 2 A at full Rds(on) would push 18 W — well within the 45 W limit if the heatsink keeps the junction below 150°C. Gate charge is only 3 nC at 10 V. That is low — a small gate-drive transformer or a logic-level driver can switch it into the hundreds of kHz without breaking a sweat. Input capacitance Ciss is 95 pF at 100 V drain, so the driver sees a light capacitive load.
That puts it in the same bin as avionics auxiliary supplies, satellite PSUs, and downhole instrumentation, not just industrial SMPS.
