60 V / 20 A N-channel — what these ratings mean for the load
The STP20NF06L is a 60 V drain-to-source, 20 A continuous-drain N-channel MOSFET from STMicroelectronics' STripFET™ II series. The 60 V Vdss gives roughly 20% headroom above a typical 48 V bus or a 12 V battery-charging rail after derating, so it fits applications where the rail doesn't exceed about 48 V steady-state.
70 mΩ on-resistance and 7.5 nC gate charge — conduction vs. switching loss
That's a moderate on-resistance for a 60 V / 20 A part — not the lowest in its class, but acceptable for load switching or low-frequency PWM where conduction loss dominates. The drive voltage range (5 V or 10 V for minimum Rds(on)) means you can use either a 5 V logic-level gate signal or a 10 V dedicated driver — the 4 V threshold maximum at 250 µA confirms it turns on fully with a 5 V gate drive.
TO-220 through-hole — mounting and thermal reality
The TO-220-3 through-hole package is a standard power package for moderate dissipation (60 W at case temperature). It requires a drilled PCB and a heatsink for any sustained current above a few amps. Without a heatsink, the 20 A continuous rating is not achievable in a 25°C ambient.
For a new design, this part should not be selected.
