Core and memory — the headroom that matters
The STM32L486VGT6TR: An ARM Cortex-M4 core clocked at 80 MHz with 1 MB of on-chip Flash and 128 KB of SRAM. The 1 MB Flash is enough for a full RTOS image plus a moderate application stack; the 128 KB SRAM leaves room for a heap and a few large buffers without external memory. The 32-bit single-core architecture and the DSP instruction set extension of the Cortex-M4 mean this part handles real-time filtering or FFT work without a separate DSP chip.
Connectivity and peripheral mix
82 I/O lines bring out CANbus, USB OTG, multiple SPI/I²C/UART interfaces, plus a QSPI for external Flash or RAM. The EBI/EMI interface lets you glue on parallel SRAM or an LCD controller without bit-banging GPIO. The LCD peripheral drives a segment LCD directly — no external driver needed for a display panel.
