80 MHz Cortex-M4 with FPU — DSP and control-loop headroom
The STM32L476RET6TR is an STMicroelectronics STM32L4-series 32-bit MCU built around an ARM Cortex-M4 core with single-precision FPU, clocked at 80 MHz. The FPU accelerates fixed-point math replacement for filter coefficients and trigonometric transforms, saving CPU cycles for the main loop.
The supply range bottoms out at 1.71 V, which means this MCU can run directly from a single lithium primary cell (nominal 1.5 V under load) or two alkaline cells without a boost converter. For battery-powered instruments, wireless sensor nodes, or portable medical devices, that eliminates a power-stage component and its quiescent loss. The internal brown-out detect and POR keep the core from misbehaving during battery sag.
Connectivity set — USB OTG, CAN, QSPI, SAI
This MCU carries USB OTG (Host/Device), CANbus for industrial or automotive cabin networking, QSPI for external Flash/PSRAM expansion, and SAI for audio codec interface. That combination lets a single part handle a display, a CAN gateway, external serial memory, and an audio codec — reducing the BOM to one MCU where a lower-tier part would need external USB PHY or CAN transceiver integration on the same die. The 51 I/Os in the 64-LQFP package give enough GPIO for a keypad, sensor array, and status LEDs alongside the serial interfaces.
It is not rated for under-hood or engine-bay environments (125°C junction would be needed there).
For a production BOM, this means no forced redesign within the typical 3-5 year product lifecycle. The base product number STM32L476 is a well-established STM32L4 family member with broad distributor stocking, so supply-chain risk is low compared to niche or end-of-life parts.
