180 MHz Cortex-M4 with 2 MB Flash — what the specs mean for the BOM
The STMicroelectronics STM32F479VIT6 is a high-density member of the STM32F4 series, built around an ARM Cortex-M4 core running at 180 MHz. The 71 I/O lines in a 100-LQFP package give enough GPIO for parallel displays and sensor arrays without forcing a BGA footprint. The 100-LQFP package is a practical choice for rework and prototyping — you can hand-solder it with a fine-tip iron, and it survives a hot-air rework cycle without the moisture sensitivity drama of a BGA.
On the peripheral side, the STM32F479VIT6 includes CANbus, USB OTG, an LCD parallel interface, multiple SPI/I2C/UART channels, and a 12-bit ADC with 14 channels plus a 2-channel DAC. That combination covers a typical industrial control BOM: a CAN transceiver for fieldbus, a display driver, and a handful of analog sensors through the ADC.
For a production BOM line, that means no imminent requalification risk.
