168 MHz Cortex-M4 with 1 MB Flash — what this buys you
The 168 MHz core with DSP instructions and FPU handles FFTs, motor-control math, and IIR filters in firmware rather than requiring a separate DSP. The 192 KB SRAM gives headroom for double-buffered graphics or audio buffers alongside the protocol stack. Peripheral set includes CANbus, USB OTG, multiple SPI and I²C interfaces, I²S for audio, and a 12-bit ADC with 16 channels plus two 12-bit DACs. The 51 GPIOs in the 64-LQFP package cover most sensor-and-actuator arrays without a port expander.
This part is suited for new production builds and ongoing BOM lines without forced redesign. The base product number is STM32F405, part of the broad STM32F4 family that shares pin compatibility across density options.
Package and footprint notes for the layout review
Standard LQFP footprint with thermal pad on the underside — the pad should be stitched to ground plane with at least four vias to keep junction temperature in check under continuous 168 MHz operation. Decoupling: one 100 nF per VDD pair plus a 4.7 µF bulk on the main supply rail. The internal oscillator is available, but an external crystal on the HSE pins delivers tighter timing for USB or CAN bit-rate accuracy.
