Package and mounting
The STGWA40H120F2 is a 1200 V, 80 A continuous Trench Field Stop IGBT from STMicroelectronics in the TO-247-3 Long Leads package. Trench Field Stop gives you the low on-state voltage of a punch-through structure without the slow tail current — so it switches cleanly at moderate frequencies without a snubber in most hard-switching topologies. The 2.6 V Vce(on) at 15 V gate drive and 40 A collector current is the conduction loss floor at the nominal operating point. Total gate charge is 158 nC at 15 V. A gate driver needs to source and sink about 1.6 µC per switching cycle; at 20 kHz switching, that's 3.2 mA average drive current — well within a standard isolated gate-driver IC, but check the peak current rating of the driver for the turn-on and turn-off edges.
Switching losses and timing – the scorch-mark numbers
Tested at 600 V bus, 40 A, 10 Ohm gate resistor, 15 V gate drive: turn-on energy is 1 mJ, turn-off energy is 1.32 mJ. Pulsed collector current rating is 160 A — double the continuous 80 A rating.
Package and mounting – through-hole reality check
TO-247-3 Long Leads — through-hole mounting, not surface-mount. Operating junction temperature range is -55°C to 175°C.
STMicroelectronics lists the STGWA40H120F2 as Active product status. Normal lead times through distribution apply — quoted to order against your BOM quantity. ROHS3 compliant. The TO-247 Long Leads package is standard through-hole — no special handling beyond normal ESD precautions for a power device.
