What the 650 V, 30 A rating means for a motor-drive or PFC stage
The STGW30H65FB is a 650 V, 30 A trench field stop IGBT from STMicroelectronics in a TO-247-3 through-hole package. The 650 V collector-emitter breakdown gives you headroom on a 400 V DC bus — the typical rail in a three-phase motor drive or a power-factor-correction stage — without needing a higher-voltage, higher-loss device.
Conduction and switching losses — sizing the heatsink and gate driver
The 260 W package maximum means the die can handle it, but the heatsink has to pull that heat away. The switching energy numbers — 151 µJ turn-on, 293 µJ turn-off under the test condition of 400 V, 30 A, 10 Ohm gate resistor, 15 V gate drive — let you calculate the switching loss at your operating frequency. Gate charge is 149 nC. A typical gate driver delivering 2 A peak can charge the gate in about 75 ns, but the 37 ns turn-on delay and 146 ns turn-off delay at 25°C set the practical switching speed floor.
