500 V, 3 A N-channel in an IPak — what you're looking at
The STD4NK50Z-1 is a 500 V, 3 A N-channel power MOSFET from STMicroelectronics' SuperMESH™ series, built with a Zener-protected gate structure for enhanced avalanche ruggedness.
At 2.7 Ω max (1.5 A, 10 V), the on-resistance is moderate — not the lowest in the 500 V class, but paired with a 12 nC gate charge it keeps the driver stage simple.
Through-hole IPak — board-level fit for repair and retrofit
The IPak (TO-251AA) package has three short leads that sit flush with the plastic body — no tab overhang like a TO-220. It's a common footprint for power stages on single-layer boards and in cramped enclosures where a TO-220 won't fit. The through-hole mount means it's rework-friendly: a soldering iron and solder wick are enough to swap it, which is why you'll see it on power-supply boards that get field repairs.
Lifecycle and sourcing — still a current production part
STMicroelectronics lists the STD4NK50Z-1 as Active. The base product number STD4N covers a family of 500 V N-channel parts; the Z suffix indicates the SuperMESH generation with Zener protection. For dual-sourcing, the closest pin-compatible sibling is the STD4NK50Z (TO-252 DPAK surface-mount variant) — same die, same ratings, different package. The STD4NK50Z-2 (TO-220) is another through-hole option with the same electrical specs but a larger tab for better heatsinking.
