Automotive-grade TVS for 5.8 V rail protection
The STMicroelectronics SM6T6V8CAY is a bidirectional Zener TVS diode in the SM6T family, rated for 600 W peak pulse power (10/1000 µs waveform) and qualified to AEC-Q101. It clamps transients on a 5.8 V reverse standoff rail, with a minimum breakdown voltage of 6.45 V and a maximum clamping voltage of 13.4 V at the peak pulse current. The single bidirectional channel protects against surges of either polarity, which simplifies layout for AC-coupled or differential signal lines in automotive ECUs, sensor modules, and body-control domains. The SMB (DO-214AA) surface-mount package suits automated assembly flows common in tier-one production.
For a procurement team, that qualification is the gate for PPAP submission to a tier-one customer.
600 W peak pulse — sizing the clamp
At the 8/20 µs waveform the peak pulse current reaches 298 A. For a 5.8 V rail, the 13.4 V clamping voltage gives the downstream regulator or IC enough headroom to survive an ISO 7637-2 pulse 2a or 3a without secondary protection. The bidirectional structure means a single device handles positive and negative transients, saving board area versus two unidirectional diodes back-to-back.
The cathode band is absent on a bidirectional device — orientation is not polarity-sensitive, which eliminates a common placement error in reflow.
