The STMicroelectronics SM4T7V6AY is a unidirectional TRANSIL™ TVS diode from the automotive-grade SM4TY series, rated for 400W peak pulse power (10/1000µs waveform) and AEC-Q101 qualified. It clamps transients on a 6.5V nominal rail (reverse standoff) with a breakdown minimum of 7.2V and a maximum clamping voltage of 14.5V at the rated peak pulse current of 160A (8/20µs).
Voltage thresholds and protection margin
The 6.5V standoff voltage means the diode is effectively an open circuit below that level, drawing negligible leakage. Breakdown starts at 7.2V minimum, so a 5V or 3.3V logic rail is safe — the diode only conducts when a transient pushes the line above 7.2V.
The DO-214AC (SMA) package is a two-lead SOD-123-like body with a visible cathode band; it reflows cleanly with a standard lead-free profile and is easy to hand-replace with hot air if a board comes back for rework.
