What the SM30T39CAY protects and where it goes
The STMicroelectronics SM30T39CAY is a bidirectional TRANSIL™ TVS diode from the automotive SM30TY series, qualified to AEC-Q101. It is designed to clamp voltage transients on 33V nominal rails — typical for 24V automotive systems, truck electricals, and industrial 28V supplies — with a peak pulse power rating of 3000W (3kW) under the 10/1000µs waveform. The single bidirectional channel handles both positive and negative surges, which simplifies layout on AC-coupled or bipolar signal lines and eliminates the risk of reverse-installation errors during rework.
Breakdown and clamping — where the protection window sits
The reverse standoff voltage is 33V, meaning the diode stays high-impedance below that level and does not load the protected rail. Breakdown is guaranteed at a minimum of 36.7V, and clamping is held to a maximum of 53.3V at the rated peak pulse current of 56.3A. That 53.3V ceiling is the let-through voltage a downstream DC-DC converter or ECU input must survive. For a 24V nominal system with a 36V load-dump clamp upstream, this part provides a second-stage transient shield without interfering with normal bus voltage.
