3 kW TVS Zener for automotive transient protection
The STMicroelectronics SM30T19AY is a 3 kW peak-pulse-power TVS Zener diode from the TRANSIL™ family, designed for automotive transient suppression. It clamps a 16 V reverse standoff rail to 26 V at 115.4 A peak pulse current (10/1000 µs waveform), making it a fit for load-dump, alternator field decay, and inductive-load kickback in 12 V vehicle electrical systems. The AEC-Q101 qualification and -55 to 175 °C junction temperature range allow deployment in under-hood and engine-bay environments where ambient heat and repetitive surge stress are routine.
The 26 V maximum clamping voltage at 115.4 A is the number that matters for downstream component stress. A 12 V nominal rail with a 36 V absolute-max input IC sees 26 V as a safe clamp — 10 V of margin below the IC's failure threshold. The 3 kW peak pulse rating (8/20 µs or 10/1000 µs waveform) covers the ISO 7637-2 pulse 5a load-dump energy typical of 12 V alternator systems. Because the device is unidirectional (single channel), it protects only positive transients; a bidirectional or series pair would be needed for AC-coupled lines.
Active lifecycle and automotive qualification
The AEC-Q101 qualification means it has passed the automotive-grade stress tests: high-temperature reverse bias, temperature cycling, and surge endurance.
