Selectable acceleration range and sensitivity

The LIS3DH is a three-axis digital accelerometer from STMicroelectronics with user-selectable full-scale ranges of ±2g, ±4g, ±8g, and ±16g. Sensitivity scales inversely with range: 1000 LSB/g at ±2g down to 83 LSB/g at ±16g — the ±2g setting gives the finest resolution for low-vibration monitoring, while ±16g suits impact or high-shock events where the full dynamic range is needed. Output data rate is programmable from 0.5 Hz to 625 Hz via the on-chip adjustable bandwidth filter. A 625 Hz ODR captures vibration signatures up to roughly 300 Hz (Nyquist), adequate for bearing monitoring or tilt sensing in industrial equipment; the 0.5 Hz floor is useful for long-period inclination or low-power wake-on-motion applications.

Digital interface and supply integration

Communication is through either I²C or SPI — the CS pin selects the bus. The 16-LGA package (3x3 mm body, 0.5 mm pitch) is a surface-mount land-grid array with an exposed pad on the bottom. The centre pad should be soldered to a PCB ground plane for both mechanical stability and thermal conduction — the LGA footprint is standard for MEMS accelerometers and reflow profiles follow JEDEC J-STD-020 for moisture-sensitive devices.

Temperature range and on-chip features

The on-chip temperature sensor provides a relative reading for offset compensation across the thermal envelope — useful when the accelerometer is mounted near a heat source on the PCB and the zero-g offset drifts with the die temperature. Additional integrated features include selectable scale and adjustable bandwidth, which reduce the external component count — no separate filter capacitors or gain-setting resistors are needed. The digital output eliminates the ADC channel requirement on the host MCU, saving two to three pins compared to an analog accelerometer.
