The STMicroelectronics L6498D is a dual-channel gate driver that can be configured as either high-side or low-side for driving IGBTs and N-channel MOSFETs. The bootstrap supply supports a high-side voltage up to 500 V, making it suited for half-bridge and full-bridge topologies in motor drives, inverters, and switched-mode power supplies.
Supply voltage and bootstrap design
The device operates from a 10 V to 20 V supply rail, which covers the typical gate-drive voltages for IGBTs (15 V) and logic-level MOSFETs (10 V to 12 V). The 500 V maximum bootstrap voltage on the high side means the driver can float the gate drive up to a 500 V DC bus — common in 3-phase motor drives running off rectified 230 VAC or 400 VDC links. When sizing the bootstrap capacitor, factor in the 2.5 A sink current and switching frequency; the datasheet application section provides the calculation, but a 1 µF to 10 µF ceramic across the bootstrap diode is a typical starting point.
