What this BLDC driver brings to a motor-drive BOM
The STMicroelectronics L6229Q is a fully integrated three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor driver that packs the control logic and power stage into a single 32-VFQFPN-EP package. It runs on a supply range from 8V to 52V — wide enough to cover 12V, 24V, and 48V nominal bus voltages — and delivers 1.4A continuous output per half-bridge. The BiCDMOS process keeps the on-resistance low while letting the logic interface run at standard 5V or 3.3V levels through a parallel control port. This part is meant for general-purpose BLDC motor control: think fans, pumps, small compressors, spindle drives, and automation actuators where you need a compact single-chip solution. The temperature range of -25°C to 125°C (junction) covers most industrial enclosures and automotive cabin environments — not downhole or mil-spec, but solid for a factory floor or a vehicle interior.
8V to 52V supply — what it means for your rail
The L6229Q's supply voltage covers both the motor bus and the logic supply from the same 8V to 52V range. That means you can run it off a 12V or 24V industrial rail without a separate regulator for the gate drive — the chip handles its own bootstrap and charge pump internally. At the top end, 52V gives headroom on a nominal 48V bus, which is common in servo drives and e-mobility applications. Just keep the bulk capacitance and PCB trace width sized for the 1.4A output current plus inrush.
Three half-bridges, parallel interface — field-swap perspective
The three half-bridge outputs are laid out for a standard BLDC six-step commutation sequence. The parallel interface means you drive the six control lines (three high-side, three low-side) directly from a microcontroller's GPIO or a timer — no SPI configuration, no register setup. That makes it straightforward to swap into an existing design: the control logic is transparent, and the exposed pad on the package needs a decent thermal via pattern under the paddle to get the heat out. On a rework bench, this is a hot-air job — the 5x5 mm QFN is not socket-friendly, but with a proper stencil and profile it goes down clean.
Lifecycle and sourcing reality
That means you can qualify it into a new BOM without worrying about a surprise EOL next quarter. The STSPIN L62 series is ST's mainstream integrated motor driver family, so supply through independent distribution is consistent. For a BOM line that needs a three-phase BLDC driver at this current and voltage range, the L6229Q is a low-risk fit.
