10A Buck Regulator in Multiwatt-15
The L4970A is a step-down (buck) switching regulator from STMicroelectronics, delivering up to 10 A of continuous output current from a single positive rail. It comes in a Multiwatt-15 through-hole package with bent and staggered leads — a classic power package that sinks heat through the metal tab into the PCB or a heatsink. Output voltage is adjustable from a minimum of 5.1 V up to 40 V, set by an external resistor divider. The switching frequency is fixed at 200 kHz, and the part does not include a synchronous rectifier — the freewheeling diode is external, which is typical for this generation of buck controllers.
Input Range and Thermal Grade
Input voltage range spans 15 V to 50 V, so the regulator works from standard 24 V and 48 V industrial rails.
