50 V, 20 A dual FERD — low Vf trade-off in a full-pack

The FERD structure delivers a forward voltage of 490 mV at 20 A — lower than a conventional Schottky at the same current — but with a higher reverse leakage of 800 µA at the 50 V maximum. The fast recovery rating (≤500 ns, >200 mA) places this part in line-frequency rectification and output OR-ing roles, not high-frequency switching above a few tens of kilohertz.

Conduction loss and leakage — the FERD compromise

At 20 A per diode, the 490 mV Vf (max) sets a conduction loss of about 9.8 W per diode at full load. The common-cathode pair in a single TO-220FP package shares the same heatsink tab, so the total dissipation for both diodes running at 20 A each is nearly 20 W — well within the full-pack's thermal capability when mounted to a suitable heatsink. The 800 µA reverse leakage at 50 V is the price for the low Vf. At elevated junction temperatures, leakage rises exponentially; design the thermal path so the junction stays well below 175°C under worst-case load and ambient conditions to avoid thermal runaway in a high-voltage, high-current rail.
