Snubberless™ triac for inductive AC loads
The STMicroelectronics BTB16-700CWRG is a Snubberless™ Alternistor triac rated for 700 V off-state and 16 A RMS on-state current, housed in a TO-220-3 through-hole package. Gate trigger current is 35 mA max with a 1.3 V max trigger voltage, compatible with standard MCU I/O via a driver transistor.
16 A RMS — heatsink and derating decisions
The 16 A RMS on-state current is the continuous load rating. In practice, a TO-220 in free air at 25°C ambient will need a heatsink to stay below the 125°C junction limit at full current. The non-repetitive surge rating of 160 A at 50 Hz and 168 A at 60 Hz covers motor start and capacitor-charging inrush — that figure is what the fuse or breaker must be sized below to avoid nuisance trips. The 35 mA holding current is typical for a 16 A triac; it ensures the device latches on cleanly at low load currents.
STMicroelectronics no longer manufactures this specific order code. If your design can accept a pin-compatible alternative, the wider BTB16 family (same TO-220 footprint, same 700 V / 16 A ratings) includes active variants — but the CWRG suffix (Snubberless™, 35 mA Igt) may differ in trigger sensitivity or commutation grade.
