Headline ratings for the BOM line
The BTB16-600SWRG is a 16 A RMS on-state TRIAC with a 600 V off-state blocking voltage, housed in a TO-220 through-hole package. The 16 A rating is the continuous RMS current the device can conduct when bolted to a suitable heatsink — for a resistive heater or a motor soft-start circuit, this sets the load ceiling.

With a maximum gate trigger current (Igt) of 10 mA and a maximum gate trigger voltage (Vgt) of 1.3 V, this is a logic-level or sensitive-gate TRIAC.
Surge capability and thermal margin
Non-repetitive surge current (Itsm) is rated 160 A at 50 Hz and 168 A at 60 Hz — this is the peak current the die can handle for one mains half-cycle during a fault or inrush event. For a motor start or capacitive load, the surge rating must exceed the worst-case inrush to avoid die rupture. The hold current (Ih) is 15 mA max, which keeps the TRIAC latched once triggered, preventing premature turn-off on inductive loads.
The TO-220 tab is the thermal path; a heatsink with forced air or a large metal panel is expected for continuous 16 A operation.
