STMicroelectronics lists the BTA16-700BWRG as obsolete.
16 A, 700 V — the load-handling envelope
The BTA16-700BWRG is a Snubberless™ Alternistor triac rated for 16 A RMS continuous on-state current and 700 V off-state blocking voltage. The 700 V off-state rating gives comfortable margin for 230 VAC or 277 VAC mains lines, even with the line transients common in industrial environments. Surge capability is 160 A at 50 Hz and 168 A at 60 Hz non-repetitive — enough for lamp inrush or motor start events.
Temperature range and package — where it fits
The TO-220-3 through-hole package mounts to a heatsink with a single screw — standard for this current class. Gate trigger current is 50 mA max, gate trigger voltage 1.3 V max, and hold current 50 mA max, so a simple microcontroller GPIO driving an optocoupler or a small bipolar transistor can fire it.
Pin-compatible alternatives in the family
The BTA16-700BRG is the same base product (BTA16) in the same TO-220-3 package but a standard (non-Snubberless) triac. If your design already includes an external snubber, that part is a drop-in replacement. For a Snubberless replacement, verify the gate trigger and hold current specs against your drive circuit.
