600 V / 12 A Snubberless alternistor — what it does for the design
The STMicroelectronics BTA12-600CW is a Snubberless™ alternistor triac rated for 600 V off-state voltage and 12 A RMS on-state current. The alternistor structure (also called a Hi-Com triac) gives it better commutating dv/dt immunity, so it handles the phase-control and zero-crossing switching that drives AC loads in industrial and appliance power stages.
Gate drive and thermal headroom
With a maximum gate trigger current of 35 mA and a maximum gate trigger voltage of 1.3 V, the BTA12-600CW can be driven directly from a microcontroller I/O pin through a series resistor — no additional driver transistor needed for most logic families. The 35 mA maximum hold current means the triac stays latched once triggered as long as the load current stays above that threshold, which is typical for a 12 A device. The 120 A / 126 A non-repetitive surge current rating (50/60 Hz) gives a healthy margin for inrush from capacitive or filament loads during turn-on.
STMicroelectronics lists the BTA12-600CW as Obsolete. There is no official ST successor order code for this specific variant, so any replacement requires a form-fit-function evaluation of the application's load and drive requirements.
