The STMicroelectronics 1.5KE82CARL is a bidirectional transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode from the TRANSIL™ series, rated for 1500W peak pulse power at 10/1000µs.
What the 1500W rating buys you
For a 70.1V rail, this translates to a peak pulse current of 69A (8/20µs waveform), which covers most industrial surge requirements such as IEC 61000-4-5 Level 2 or 3. The 675pF capacitance at 1MHz is moderate — acceptable for DC power and low-speed I/O protection, but may load high-frequency signal lines above a few MHz.
Clamping voltage and standoff margin
The reverse standoff voltage of 70.1V means the diode will not conduct appreciably below that level, so it sits transparently on a 70V nominal rail. Breakdown is guaranteed at 77.9V minimum, and clamping is specified at 146V maximum. That 146V clamp is the voltage the protected circuit must survive — a downstream DC-DC converter with a 100V absolute maximum input would be at risk. The 70.1V standoff also leaves headroom for a 48V nominal bus with transients, but a 60V rail would be too close to the breakdown threshold.
Housed in a DO-201AA (DO-27) axial-lead through-hole package, this device is intended for PCB or point-to-point wiring. The axial leads suit high-reliability soldering in power supplies, industrial controls, and telecom line cards.
