Transient suppressor for 6.4 V rails — what it protects
The STMicroelectronics 1.5KE7V5A is a unidirectional TRANSIL™ TVS diode from the 1.5KE series, designed to clamp transients on a nominal 6.4 V DC rail. It delivers 1500 W peak pulse power per the 10/1000 µs waveform, with a breakdown voltage of 7.13 V and a maximum clamping voltage of 14.5 V at the rated peak pulse current of 690 A (8/20 µs waveform). Typical applications include general-purpose overvoltage protection in industrial, telecom, and consumer power supplies where a through-hole DO-201 package is acceptable.
Capacitance and signal-integrity trade-off
The 1.5KE7V5A presents 8500 pF capacitance at 1 MHz. That is a high value for a TVS diode — it will load down any high-speed data line it is placed on. This part is intended for DC power rail protection, not for clamping transients on communication buses like CAN, RS-485, or Ethernet. If your design needs transient protection on a signal line, look at a lower-capacitance TVS family (e.g., the STMicroelectronics ESDA or SM6T series) rather than the 1.5KE series.
