That 1500 W rating means it can absorb a single 45.8 A surge at the clamping voltage of 34.86 V without failing — the energy is dumped into the silicon junction, not the board trace. The reverse standoff voltage is 20.5 V; the protected rail should stay below this level during normal operation. Breakdown occurs at a minimum of 21.6 V, so the diode begins conducting just above the rail voltage, shunting the transient before it reaches downstream components.
Bidirectional — one device for AC or bipolar DC rails
A single bidirectional channel clamps equally in both polarities, making this part suitable for AC signal lines or bipolar DC supplies where the transient can swing positive or negative relative to ground. No need for two back-to-back unidirectional diodes.
