Protection parameters and what they decide
The 1.5SMC16C: With a 13.6 V reverse standoff voltage, this part sits on a 12 V nominal rail without conducting in steady state; the breakdown minimum is 14.4 V, and clamping is guaranteed at 23.63 V with a peak pulse current of 67.6 A. The single bidirectional channel handles positive and negative transients in one package — useful where the protected line sees symmetrical surges, such as AC-coupled data interfaces or ungrounded DC rails.
Package and deployment context
Housed in a DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package, the large tab area conducts heat to the PCB copper pour — keep the pad size per the datasheet recommendation to stay within the 1500 W peak capability at the rated pulse width. Surface-mount assembly — no through-hole lead forming; the part reflows with standard SnPb or SAC solder profiles.
