Surge rating and clamping behaviour
The 1.5SMC160C: The reverse standoff voltage is 136 V, meaning the device blocks DC voltages up to that level without conducting. Breakdown occurs at 144 V minimum, triggering the avalanche clamp. The 1500 W rating is the peak power the junction can absorb in a single pulse; derating is required for repetitive surges or elevated ambient temperatures.
Package and temperature range
The SMC footprint handles the 1500 W pulse without the thermal limitations of smaller DO-214AA (SMB) packages. The bidirectional configuration (single channel) protects against both positive and negative transients with one device, simplifying the BOM for AC-coupled or bipolar signal lines.
Sourcing reality: obsolete, last-time-buy managed
The functional replacement is a parametric match within the same 1.5SMC family at a different standoff voltage — a board-level review is required.
