Its on-resistance maxes at 22 mOhm when driven with 10 V on the gate at 25 A — that is the number you plug into the conduction loss calculation for a motor drive or DC-DC converter. The logic-level gate-drive spec (rated for 4 V and 10 V) means a 5 V microcontroller output can pull the gate above threshold without a separate driver stage, though the 48 nC gate charge at 5 V still needs a driver with enough peak current to keep switching edges clean.
D2PAK surface-mount — footprint and thermal reality
The D2PAK (TO-263-3) package with exposed tab is the surface-mount version of the TO-220. At ambient, with no heatsink, derate to 3.8 W.
The IRLZ44NSTRR is listed as obsolete. A pin-compatible surface-mount substitute would need to match the D2PAK footprint, 55 V Vdss, and logic-level threshold; the IRLR8726PbF in DPAK or the IRLB8748PbF in D2PAK are worth evaluating, but neither is a guaranteed second source.
