500 V CoolMOS in a full-pack TO-220 — what this part was designed for
The Infineon IPA50R520CPXKSA1 is a 500 V N-channel CoolMOS power MOSFET in a TO-220 Full Pack through-hole package. It belongs to Infineon's CoolMOS series, a family optimized for high-voltage switching with low gate charge and fast body diode recovery.
Infineon no longer manufactures this specific order code in volume.
The 500 V Vdss rating places this MOSFET squarely in the offline primary-side switching arena — flyback, forward, half-bridge, and PFC boost stages up to about 250 W output. The 520 mOhm Rds(on) at 10 V gate drive sets the conduction loss: at 3.8 A the dissipation is roughly 7.5 W, which the 66 W package power rating can handle with adequate heatsinking. Input capacitance is 680 pF at 100 V drain-source, which keeps the switching node capacitance manageable for clean turn-on and turn-off edges.
Package and mounting — the full-pack advantage
The TO-220 Full Pack (PG-TO220-3-31) is a fully isolated through-hole package. This simplifies assembly and reduces thermal resistance in the mounting stack. The through-hole mounting suits point-of-load boards and power modules where mechanical robustness matters over board density.
