What replaces an LM358, LM324, LM741, LM311, LM393 or TL071?

Executive Sourcing Takeaway

The eight-pin socket is not a specification. Into the same DIP-8 outline you can put a single op-amp (LM741, TL071), a dual op-amp (LM358, NE5532, LM833) or a dual comparator (LM311, LM393) — and the pin functions move between them. On the LM311 pin 1 is the emitter/ground reference; on the LM393 the same pin is an output channel, which is why that cross is marked do not insert rather than fit carefully. The same arithmetic runs across the 14-pin row: the LM324 is a quad op-amp, the LM339 a quad comparator, the same body and never a socket substitute in either direction. Match the family and the function count first, then the pin drawing.

Table of Contents (8 points)

The substitutes, and what each one actually is

A drop-in here means the same package, the same pin map and the same function — a dual op-amp for a dual op-amp. Function count is the first thing to check, because that is where the socket stops telling you the truth.

Original Package Verified substitute Level What changes
LM741 DIP-8 / TO-99 / SOIC-8 LM741C drop-in DIP-8 / SOIC-8; offset null on pins 1 and 5, as across the family
LM741 DIP-8 / TO-99 / SOIC-8 LM741A drop-in Same pinout; TO-99 cans for the oldest fixtures
LM741 DIP-8 / TO-99 / SOIC-8 uA741 drop-in Standard DIP-8: 1 and 5 null, 2 inverting, 3 non-inverting, 4 V−, 6 out, 7 V+
LM358 SOIC-8 SGM8552-SR drop-in Pin-for-pin in SOIC-8 / MSOP-8; rail-to-rail output reaches the full 0–3.3 V swing
LM358 SOIC-8 TP358-SR drop-in Direct solder drop-in on a standard SOIC-8 op-amp layout
TL071 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 TL081 drop-in DIP-8 / SOIC-8, identical pin map
TL071 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 TL071H pin-to-pin Same DIP-8 / SOIC-8 pin function
TL071 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 TL061 function only Same 8-pin body; the input and supply current class moves
TL071 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 TL072 do not insert The dual pinout differs completely — no null pins, the second channel fills 5–7
NE5532 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 NE5532A drop-in DIP-8 / SOIC-8, pin-identical; the A is the improved grade
NE5532 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 NJM5532DD drop-in DIP-8 standard pinout
NE5532 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 LM833 function only Standard dual pinout; no offset-null pins in this family
NE5532 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 OPA2134 function only Pin-compatible 8-pin dual — the classic rolling slot
AD8605 SOT-23-5 / MSOP-8 AD8606 function only MSOP-8 / SOIC-8 land pattern — a different footprint from the SOT-23-5 single
AD8605 SOT-23-5 / MSOP-8 AD8608 function only TSSOP-14 / SOIC-14; verify the package letter on the orderable number
LM324 SOIC-14 / DIP-14 LM2902 drop-in Same 14-pin pinout across every grade
LM324 SOIC-14 / DIP-14 LM324B drop-in SOIC-14 / TSSOP-14, standard quad arrangement
LM324 SOIC-14 / DIP-14 LM324LV pin-to-pin SOIC-14 footprint matches the family; pinout per the LV datasheet
LM324 SOIC-14 / DIP-14 LM358 function only A different footprint entirely — a dual against a quad
LM311 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 LM211 drop-in DIP-8 / SOIC-8, pin-identical to the whole LM311 family
LM311 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 LT1011 pin-to-pin Same DIP-8 pin function — verify the vendor drawing against the LM311 map
LM311 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 LM393 do not insert Pin 1 is the emitter/ground reference on the LM311 and an output channel on the LM393
LM393 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 LM2903 drop-in Identical 8-pin footprint
LM393 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 LM358 function only Same 8-pin footprint — only the schematic knows a comparator from an op-amp
LM393 DIP-8 / SOIC-8 LM339 function only 14-pin — not a socket substitute for the 8-pin dual
LM339 DIP-14 / SOIC-14 LM2901 drop-in Identical 14-pin pinout across every grade
LM339 DIP-14 / SOIC-14 LM339B drop-in DIP-14 / SOIC-14, pin-identical
LM339 DIP-14 / SOIC-14 LM324 do not insert Same body, different pin functions — never a socket substitute in either direction

The same socket, four different parts

The DIP-8 outline is shared by a single op-amp, a dual op-amp and two flavours of comparator, and the pin map is only consistent within one family. The three that catch people are worth naming: the LM311 against the LM393, where pin 1 changes meaning from a ground reference to an output; the LM339 against the LM324, a quad comparator against a quad op-amp in an identical 14-pin body; and the TL071 against the TL072, a single against a dual, where the dual loses the offset-null pins entirely and puts the second channel on pins 5 to 7.

A comparator is not a slow op-amp and an op-amp is not a comparator with hysteresis missing. Both fit the same footprint in several of these rows — the LM393 and the LM358 are both 8-pin — and the difference shows up as behaviour rather than as a failure to fit: an op-amp used as a comparator is usually too slow and may not tolerate the differential input it sees, and a comparator used as an amplifier has no phase compensation for the feedback you are about to wrap around it.

Null pins, grades and the quiet differences

The offset-null pins are the other quiet divider. The LM741, the TL071 and the uA741 carry null on pins 1 and 5; the LM358 and the LM324 do not have them at all, and the LM833 is described in the same breath as a standard dual pinout with no null pins. When a board uses those pins, the substitute has to provide them — and when it does not, a part that has them is harmless, which is why the rolling slot in audio gear tolerates the NE5532 / OPA2134 direction so well.

Grades and temperature windows are the third axis, and they are where the letters live. LM324, LM2902, LM324B and LM324LV are the same quad op-amp across different grade and supply families; LM311, LM211 and LM111 are the same comparator across temperature windows. Moving between them changes the specification you were relying on, not the part you are replacing.

What we will not claim

Every mapping above was checked against the manufacturer datasheet for package, pin map and function count, and where the datasheet did not support one it is not listed. Three rows carry do not insert rather than a substitute, because that is what the data supports. Confirm against your own schematic before a redesign, and treat the level as the scope of the risk.

Each of these is a part or part family this guide covers, linked to the catalog row we hold for it — specifications, package, lifecycle stage and the datasheet where we have localized one. Where the guide names a family, the row shown is the orderable part number we stock. A part the guide covers but that is missing from this list is one we do not currently carry; send the number and it goes out for sourcing with the rest.

How this guide is written

Written by the ICBOMS sourcing desk in Shenzhen and reviewed against the manufacturer documents and industry standards the guide cites. Statements are limited to what this desk does and how a part is judged — no indicative prices, lead times or stock counts, because those are quoted per line against a live check. Each guide carries the date it was last reviewed at the top of the page.
