What this 16-channel driver does on the board
The MAX6979AUG+ is a linear LED driver IC that sinks constant current through 16 output channels, each rated for 55 mA. It uses a shift-register topology, with a supply range of 3 V to 5.5 V. Internal switches handle the current sinking, so you don't need external driver transistors per channel. The 24-TSSOP package is a surface-mount footprint that fits on standard LED matrix PCBs.
Temperature range and where it runs
The 125°C upper limit gives you thermal headroom if the board is crowded and the LED current is pushing the package dissipation.
