The MAX5902LCEUT: One catch: the part is RoHS non-compliant (lead-bearing finish). If your BOM requires full RoHS exemption or you are shipping into a jurisdiction that enforces RoHS on spares, budget for a waiver or a compliant alternative. The lead finish is fine for industrial and telecom equipment that is not subject to RoHS restrictions.
9V to 72V supply — fits 48V telecom and 24V industrial rails
The 9V to 72V supply range covers the common telecom nominal of 48V (with margin for -48V reverse-poled systems), as well as 24V industrial control panels. The wide input means the same controller works across a 12V, 24V, or 48V backplane without a separate regulator for the controller itself. Internal switch is absent — this is a controller, not a full hot-swap solution with an integrated FET. You pair it with an external N-channel MOSFET. That gives you flexibility to size the FET for your load current, but it also means the BOM has two active parts instead of one.
Programmable protection set — set it and forget it
The MAX5902LCEUT integrates a programmable circuit breaker, current limit, slew rate, thermal limit, and undervoltage lockout (UVLO). On a 48V line card, you set the current limit and slew rate via external resistor and capacitor to control inrush when the card is hot-plugged. The latched fault feature means the controller shuts off and stays off until the fault is cleared and power is cycled — no auto-retry that could mask a shorted board. The 1 mA supply current is the controller's own draw — negligible against the load current the external FET handles.
SOT-23-6 — field-swappable with basic iron
The SOT-23-6 package (supplier device package same as the case) is small enough for dense boards but still hand-solderable with a fine-tip iron. No hot-air station required — a technician in the field can swap it on a line card with the kit they carry. Pin 1 is usually marked with a dot or chamfer; orientation is unambiguous once you see the silkscreen. Surface-mount only — no through-hole variant. If your board is all through-hole, this part needs a rework step or a small adapter board.
