What this RS-232 transceiver does on the board
It converts logic-level UART signals to RS-232 voltage levels for serial communication over cables up to the standard's reach. The 1Mbps data rate supports common baud rates including 921.6 kbaud without bit-rate limiting. Supply range from 3V to 5.5V lets it run from a 3.3V or 5V rail, which simplifies BOM consolidation across mixed-voltage designs. The 500 mV receiver hysteresis provides noise margin on longer or noisier cable runs.
Housed in a 16-pin SSOP body measuring 0.209" wide with 5.30 mm width, the MAX3227EAE+ uses a standard surface-mount footprint. The supplier device package is 16-SSOP.
The wide supply tolerance helps it ride through 5V rail dips common in industrial backplanes.
It is ROHS3 compliant.
