Product details

Transformer driver for isolated power — what the 450 µA supply current means

The MAX253CSA+T is a transformer driver IC from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) designed to generate isolated power rails in applications where a small, simple isolated supply is needed. The 450 µA supply current is the quiescent draw with no load on the secondary — the actual input current scales with the transformer turns ratio and the load current demanded on the isolated side.

3.3V / 5V supply — the design decision

The MAX253CSA+T accepts either a 3.3V or a 5V supply, selected by the transformer turns ratio and the desired output voltage. At 3.3V input the oscillator frequency and drive strength are reduced compared to 5V operation, so the maximum output power is lower. For a given transformer, the output voltage scales roughly with the input voltage. Designers should check the transformer datasheet for the recommended primary inductance and saturation current at the chosen supply voltage — the MAX253's internal oscillator runs at a fixed frequency (typically 100 kHz to 500 kHz depending on the variant), and the transformer must not saturate at the peak primary current.

It is not rated for industrial enclosures that see freezing starts or outdoor telecom cabinets that bake in summer sun.

8-SOIC package — layout and footprint

The 8-SOIC package (0.154" body width, 3.90 mm) is a standard surface-mount footprint shared with many op-amps, comparators, and interface ICs. The transformer driver function uses the same pinout as the original MAX253, so a layout designed for the MAX253 in SOIC-8 accepts this part without changes. The tape-and-reel option is the common procurement format for volume production; cut-tape quantities are also available for prototyping or small builds.

For new designs, this part is a safe selection from a lifecycle standpoint. The non-tape version (MAX253CSA+) is also active and may be preferred for hand-assembly or small-lot builds where tubes are easier to handle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MAX253CSA and MAX253CSA+T?

The 'T' suffix on MAX253CSA+T indicates tape-and-reel packaging. The MAX253CSA (without T) ships in tubes. The die, electrical specifications, and temperature range are identical. Choose the T version for automated pick-and-place assembly; choose the non-T version for hand-assembly or small quantities.
