Product details

-48 V hot swap controller with auto retry

The LTC4252-2CMS#PBF: Single-channel negative-voltage hot swap controller for -48 V telecom and datacom backplane applications. Drives an external N-channel MOSFET to manage inrush current and protect against overcurrent and short circuits.

The controller's programmable UVLO and OVP let you set the undervoltage and overvoltage thresholds with an external resistor divider, matching the -48 V rail's tolerance band. The current-limit and fault-timeout pins set the inrush profile and the interval before the part declares a fault. Auto Retry means the board does not need a power-cycle or manual reset after a transient overload — the controller will keep trying to bring the load up. That is useful in remote or unattended equipment, but not in systems where a latched-off response is preferred for safety or diagnostic clarity.

If the board must survive outdoor cabinets, unheated shelters, or industrial floor conditions, the LTC4252-2IMS#PBF (industrial grade, -40°C to 85°C) is the same controller in the same footprint, just with the wider temperature range.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between LTC4252-1 and LTC4252-2?

The LTC4252-1 uses a Latched Fault response — after a fault it stays off until the supply is cycled or the ON pin is toggled. The LTC4252-2 uses Auto Retry — it periodically tries to restart after a fault timeout. Both are otherwise identical in pinout and programmable features.

Is LTC4252-2CMS#PBF compatible with -48V systems?

Yes, the LTC4252-2CMS#PBF is specifically designed for -48V applications — its supply voltage range, undervoltage and overvoltage thresholds, and current-sense amplifier are all rated for the -48V telecom rail.

What is the closest functional second-source for LTC4252-2CMS#PBF?

The closest functional equivalent is the LTC4252A-2CMS#PBF — same -48V rating, same Auto Retry response, same 0°C to 70°C temperature range, same package and pinout. The "A" revision incorporates minor improvements in the undervoltage lockout timing.
