8051 core in a ROMless PLCC — what this means for your BOM
The DS80C323-QND+ is an 8-bit microcontroller built around the 8051 core, clocked at 18 MHz. It is ROMless, so all program code lives in external memory — the 256 x 8 internal RAM handles data only. That external-memory requirement is the single biggest BOM decision this part forces: you need a separate Flash or EPROM device plus address latch, which adds board area and two extra ICs. The trade-off is flexibility — you can swap firmware without spinning silicon, and the external memory can be sized to the application, not capped by an on-chip limit. The on-chip power-fail reset and watchdog timer (WDT) add a layer of brownout protection without an external supervisor IC.
44-PLCC — footprint and rework
The 44-PLCC package (J-lead, 16.59 x 16.59 mm body) is a through-hole-soldered surface-mount part. It sits in a socket or is soldered directly. J-leads are easier to inspect and rework than fine-pitch QFPs, but the PLCC socket adds height — factor that into enclosure clearance. The 32 I/O lines are enough for a keypad, a small LCD, and a handful of sensors or relays, but not for a memory-mapped peripheral bus with full address and data demux.
