5000Vrms isolation in a 16-SOIC — what it buys you
The ADUM4402ARWZ is a 4-channel, unidirectional digital isolator from Analog Devices' iCoupler family, using magnetic coupling to pass signals across a 5000Vrms isolation barrier. It is a general-purpose part — no integrated DC-DC converter, no reinforced ratings for medical patient-contact — but the 5000Vrms rating covers reinforced isolation for industrial motor drives, power inverters, and SMPS feedback paths where the working voltage stays within the 3V to 5.5V supply range. The 1Mbps data rate and 100ns propagation delay suit status feedback, slow SPI (sub-1MHz), and GPIO isolation; it is not a candidate for high-speed fieldbuses or isolated serial links above 1Mbps.
Channel direction — the 2/2 split that sets it apart
The ADUM4402ARWZ allocates its four channels as two inputs on Side 1 and two inputs on Side 2 — a symmetric 2/2 split. This is the key difference from the ADUM4401 (3/1 split) and ADUM4403 (1/3 split) in the same family. For a half-duplex UART isolation or a bidirectional control interface where you need equal channel count each way, the 2/2 split avoids wasting a channel. The unidirectional channel type means each channel's direction is fixed at the silicon level; the split is not configurable, so verify your signal direction map against the 2/2 assignment before layout.
Common-mode transient immunity — the 25kV/µs floor
The minimum common-mode transient immunity of 25kV/µs is the spec that determines whether the isolator holds data integrity when a high-voltage switching node (IGBT gate driver, MOSFET half-bridge) slams the barrier with a fast voltage step. In a motor-drive or inverter application, a CMTI below the system's dV/dt can corrupt the output for tens of nanoseconds. At 25kV/µs minimum, the ADUM4402ARWZ handles most industrial switching edges up to several hundred volts per microsecond; if your design runs GaN or SiC with sub-10ns switching edges, you need a part with higher CMTI. The rise/fall time of 2.5ns typical is consistent with the 1Mbps data rate — edge rates are not the limiting factor here.
Temperature range and supply — industrial fit
The 16-SOIC wide-body package (7.50mm width) provides the creepage distance needed to sustain the 5000Vrms rating; the narrow-body SOIC-16 would not pass the same isolation test.
Lifecycle and compliance
The part is a standard production item in the iCoupler portfolio, not a phase-out or NRND candidate. For new designs, it is a safe choice with no imminent supply discontinuity.
