Product details

The STMicroelectronics L7805ACP is a fixed 5V positive linear voltage regulator in the TO-220-3 Full Pack (TO-220FP) through-hole package. It delivers up to 1.5 A of output current and accepts an input voltage up to 35 V. The 68 dB PSRR at 120 Hz means it attenuates full-wave-rectified ripple by a factor of roughly 2500 — useful for cleaning up a bulk capacitor rail before feeding sensitive analog loads. Built-in over-temperature and short-circuit protection let it survive a sustained output short without external crowbar circuitry.

STMicroelectronics no longer manufactures this exact variant in the TO-220FP package.

Dropout voltage and quiescent current — the trade-offs

Maximum dropout is 2 V at 1 A typical, so a 7 V input is the practical minimum to hold a clean 5 V output at full load. Quiescent current runs 6 mA — negligible for a linear regulator driving a 1.5 A load, but worth noting if the rail is always-on in a battery-backed system. The 6 mA Iq flows to ground regardless of load, so a lightly loaded rail wastes about 30 mW at 5 V output.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use L7805CV instead of L7805ACP?

The L7805CV is a functional alternative in the standard TO-220 package, but the L7805ACP uses the TO-220FP full-pack (fully insulated) package. If your design requires the full-pack isolation, the L7805CV will not be a drop-in replacement.
