Product details

100 µF bulk decoupling with a 150 mOhm ESR floor

The 150 mOhm ESR sets the ripple current handling and the self-heating under load — for a 100 kHz buck converter output, that ESR contributes roughly 15 mV of ripple per amp of ripple current, which is manageable for most 3.3 V and 5 V rails.

Military temperature range and D-case footprint

The D-case 2917 (7343 Metric) package is a standard land pattern shared by multiple tantalum and polymer suppliers, so the PCB footprint is interchangeable without a layout change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a ceramic capacitor instead of this tantalum?

A ceramic capacitor can replace a tantalum in many bulk decoupling roles, but the comparison is not one-to-one. Ceramics have much lower ESR (typically <10 mOhm) and no voltage derating requirement, but they suffer from DC bias capacitance loss — a 100 µF ceramic at 10 V may drop to 30 µF or less. Tantalum holds its full 100 µF at the rated voltage. The choice depends on whether stable capacitance under bias or low ESR is more important for your rail.
