6.8 µF, 20 V, 600 mOhm ESR — the three numbers that size the rail
The TPSB685M020R0600: This is a 6.8 µF molded tantalum capacitor rated at 20 V with 600 mOhm ESR. The three numbers together define its job: bulk decoupling on a 12 V or 5 V rail where the ripple current heats the part, or hold-up capacitance in a circuit that must ride through a brief supply dropout. The 600 mOhm ESR is the figure that sets the ripple current rating and the self-heating under AC load. For a 100 kHz switching regulator output, that ESR dominates the output ripple voltage — lower ESR means less ripple at the same capacitance.
This capacitor is at home in avionics power supplies, satellite payloads, downhole instrumentation, or any sealed enclosure where the ambient cycles from cold soak to hot soak.
Case B — 1411 (3528 Metric) footprint
Manufacturer size code B, footprint 3.50 mm x 2.80 mm, seated height 2.10 mm max. This is the common 1411 / 3528 Metric case used across the TPS series. The surface-mount pads follow the standard tantalum chip footprint; no via-in-pad or special land pattern required.
