The 8 Ohm ESR is the key parameter for ripple handling: at 100 kHz switching frequency, the capacitor's self-heating is dominated by I² × ESR, so a 1 A ripple current would dissipate 8 W — well beyond the 1206 package's thermal limit. For typical decoupling with ripple currents below 100 mA, the 8 Ohm ESR is acceptable, but for output filtering on a buck converter you would parallel several or choose a lower-ESR tantalum or ceramic.
Wide temperature range and molded construction
The molded case (Type: Molded) provides mechanical robustness and humidity resistance compared to uncoated chip tantalums, though it is not hermetically sealed — conformal coating on the board is still recommended for condensing environments.
