50 V rating in a 1206 case — what it buys the design
The TAJA104M050K is a molded tantalum capacitor from the KYOCERA AVX TAJ series, rated 0.1 µF at 50 V in a 1206 (3216 Metric) case. The 50 V rating gives 2× derating margin on a 24 V rail and 1.25× on a 40 V bus — the typical rule for tantalum is 50 % voltage derating to keep field-failure rates low, so this part is comfortable on rails up to 25 V. The 22 Ohm ESR is the dominant loss term at ripple frequency — it sets the self-heating and ripple-current limit. For a 100 kHz bypass application, the ripple current should be kept below the self-heating curve in the datasheet; the ESR also contributes to the output ripple voltage in a DC-DC converter output filter.
It fits avionics black boxes, satellite power buses, downhole instrumentation, and outdoor telecom equipment that sees -40°C cold starts and 105°C enclosure interiors on a summer day.
