They had been running a Wi-Fi 4 ESP32 module in a connected sensor platform since 2022, and the buyer who approved the BOM has now asked: "Should we re-spin to Wi-Fi 6 before the next 30k-unit batch, or stay on what we know?" That conversation is now happening on every buyer's desk, because Espressif quietly compressed Wi-Fi 6 module pricing to a band no other Wi-Fi 6 silicon vendor can match — the ESP32-C61-MINI module family, launched around the $2 mark on August 4, 2026 (CNX Software, Aug 4 2026) — and followed it with mass production of the dual-core RISC-V ESP32-S31 dev board at $4.51 on Hackster.io coverage dated August 1, 2026.

Two launches, two different buyers

The phrase "Wi-Fi 6 is finally affordable" stopped being marketing copy in August 2026. Espressif pushed two distinct SKUs into the channel in roughly ten days, each aimed at a different point on the BOM. The smaller one matters most for high-volume, cost-anchored designs; the bigger one matters for designs where you are running an MCU-class workload on the wireless module itself.

The ESP32-C61-MINI-1 and ESP32-C61-MINI-1U modules reached public launch on August 4, 2026 at a street price around two dollars per module in single-unit quantities (CNX Software, Aug 4 2026). Both use the same C61 silicon — a single-core RISC-V V30 at 160 MHz with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth LE 5.0, plus PCB antenna on the MINI-1 variant and external IPEX/U.FL antenna footprint on the MINI-1U variant. That points to confidence in sustained volume, and to an inventory plan that does not depend on scarcity pricing.

What is actually tight on Wi-Fi 6 module lanes

Despite the Espressif price compression, the broader Wi-Fi 6 module market is not relaxed. Four lanes are still constrained into Q4 2026, and which one your BOM touches depends on the radio you chose two years ago and whether you have already replaced it.

Wi-Fi 6 dual-band (5 GHz + 2.4 GHz) modules from Broadcom-based vendors. The 5 GHz radio chain pulls a more expensive front-end module and an additional power amplifier, and 5 GHz wafer allocation in GaAs and SiGe lines has not loosened since 2025. Pricing on modules using Broadcom BCM4378 / BCM43684 silicon has held above $9 in single-unit pricing through the summer, with MOQ lots (250-500 pieces) closer to $7.50. Buyers using AIROPEK AIP-W6x or pre-built AzureWave AW-CM467SM modules should expect another 2-3 percent letter-of-authorization revision by mid-September. Nothing dramatic; just steady.

Murata Type 2DK / 2KL modules based on the Cypress CYW5459x family remain on allocation for some variants. Type 2DK (LBEE5ZZ2DK) is in stock at franchised channels with 8-10 week lead time, but if you are still on the older Type 1MW (LBEE5ZZ1MW) it is now a NRND-position part and you should not specify it for any new build. The replacement path runs through Type 2KL — newer silicon, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 plus Bluetooth 5.4, same module footprint.

U-blox MAYA-W1 / MAYA-W2 (formerly u-blox, now part of the larger rebranding after the Astrocast divestiture) sit in NPI territory with limited availability — both modules shipped NPI in mid-2026 and the production-volume release slipped twice to October. Quectel FCM365X — the multi-protocol NXP-based module adding Wi-Fi 6, Thread, and Zigbee to the company's smart-home and industrial IoT line, dated June 26, 2026 in trade press (IoT Business News). Quectel is in our catalog at a smaller list (currently one part, L80RE-M37, at score 62.7) but the firm is the third major module brand a Western EMS team is likely to encounter alongside Murata and U-blox. L80RE-M37 is the GNSS-only family — a sensible fallback if your wireless module sourcing is constrained by allocation but you still need a positioning component on the same BOM line. For dual-band Wi-Fi 6 with multiple protocol stacks, Quectel's high end is the FCM365X, which is currently on a six-to-eight week lead time at our Shenzhen warehouse through the September allocation cycle.

What is not tight: the Ai-Thinker Ra-01/Ra-02 LoRa module family (Ra-01, Ra-02, Ra-01S, Ra-01SH, Ra-01H — all in our catalog at secondary tier, score 62.7), because the LoRa silicon (SX127x family from Semtech) is abundantly available in the second half of 2026 and the Ai-Thinker module clones have not pulled the same allocation pressure as Wi-Fi 6 dual-band. If your wireless design does not need 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, the LoRa family is a buyer's market — pricing has eased approximately 8 percent from Q4 2025 highs.

ESP32-S2-SOLO-U-N4R2 is the Wi-Fi 4 single-core module the C61-MINI family is positioned to replace for many designs. It runs at 240 MHz, has 4 MB flash and 2 MB PSRAM (the N4R2 suffix indicates this), and uses the U-series external antenna footprint. Best fit for designs that need USB-OTG and a small footprint — the C3 is the easier re-spin target for the C61-MINI swap.

ESP32-C3-MINI-1U-N4 is the cost-anchored Wi-Fi 4 / Bluetooth LE 5.0 module that the buyer in our opening scene is running today. Single-core RISC-V at 160 MHz, 4 MB flash, PCB antenna footprint (the 1U suffix indicates the IPEX option). This is the module the C61-MINI-1U supersedes from a protocol-generation standpoint. If the team wants to move to Wi-Fi 6 in a similar physical package, the C61-MINI-1U path is drop-in adjacent — same antenna type, similar pinout, similar power rail.

ESP32-D0WD-V3 is the dual-core legacy module — the dual-core configuration of the original ESP32 silicon — still the highest-volume module Espressif has shipped since 2018. This module is what most existing industrial designs and OEM reference platforms carry, and it is not the right re-spin target for a Wi-Fi 6 upgrade; it is the legacy lane that needs to be phased out, not migrated forward. Stock for the D0WD-V3 is healthy, lead time is single-digit weeks at franchised channels; do not design new builds around it.

ESP32-PICO-V3-ZERO is the smallest-footprint module in the family — 16 × 12 × 2 mm, dual-core, Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth classic. Useful for tight-form-factor designs (wearables, miniaturized sensors) where the S2's footprint is too large but the application does not need Wi-Fi 6. Its pricing in our catalog runs in the lower single digits in volume.

For the four lines above, we run a MOQ tier structure: 10-piece trays for prototype, 100-piece reels for pilot, and full reel quantities (typically 1000 or 1500 pieces, depending on the Espressif SKU) for production. If your sourcing review is happening with less than a full-reel commitment, please flag that to our quoting desk up front — lead time curves bend sharply with smaller MOQ because the supplier allocation cost is amortized across the reel. For C61-MINI modules we are still building inventory as of this writing — the August 4 launch has not yet produced a full-reel position from Espressif — so single-piece and 100-piece inquiries will move slower than full-reel release orders.

A note on counterfeit risk for the ESP32 family. The market for cloned Espressif silicon remains small (the chip is too low-cost to economically counterfeit at the silicon level), but module-level relabeling — especially on Ai-Thinker wireless modules — is a chronic problem. For C61-MINI modules we have not yet seen a counterfeit batch enter the channel, but the launch is fresh. For any 100-piece-and-up C61 order, we strongly suggest a batch verification step (lot trace, date code inspection, and a simple AT-command authentication check) before final assembly.

How to buy through the rest of 2026, in order of priority

If your team is in the middle of a Wi-Fi module sourcing decision right now, here is the sequence we have seen work in the last two weeks.

Step 1 — Decide if you need Wi-Fi 6 at all. Buyers who have been on Wi-Fi 4 ESP32 modules do not need to re-spin for protocol generation's sake. Wi-Fi 4 with a 20 MHz channel still passes every IoT SKU whose gateway is on a 2.4 GHz SSID with under 50 stations per AP. Re-spin only if (a) your certification target market (EU under EN 303 687, or the US retail channels moving toward 6E tolerance) requires 6 GHz capability, (b) you have measured congestion on a 2.4 GHz channel in your deployment, or (c) you are trying to keep a single board SKU for both retail and industrial and the industrial certification requires Wi-Fi 6. Otherwise, the C3-MINI module stays a sound choice through 2026.

Step 2 — If you do re-spin, the C61-MINI is your module lane. Two dollars in single-unit pricing, Wi-Fi 6, BLE 5.0, Matter-ready silicon, and the same RISC-V ecosystem you already build for on the C3. Specify the MINI-1U variant for IPEX antennae (the more popular choice for industrial chassis) and the MINI-1 variant for the PCB antenna footprint. Order against a confirmed 12-week order book, not against the spot channel.

Step 3 — If you are running an MCU-with-radio architecture, the ESP32-S31 is a real option, not a marketing announcement. The mass-production timing puts it on a Q4 2026 ramp, and the Linux BSP preview from August 22, 2026 means Linux capability is now a confirmed line-item on the family — not a future promise. Treat this as a Q1 2027 fit for new designs; for designs in the EVT phase now, the S31 dev kit at $4.51 lets you bring up the application processor early.

Step 4 — Use the buyback signal as a confidence marker, not a price signal. Espressif closed a CNY 99.99 million tranche on August 13, 2026 and authorized a new CNY 200 million tranche on August 18, 2026. This is the vendor's own signal that they expect sustained volume. Treat this as evidence that the ESP32 module family will not enter end-of-life territory in 2026 or 2027 — your re-spin does not need a successor footprint pinned out.

Step 5 — Pin your fallback lane, in writing. If your primary line is Espressif C61-MINI, choose a second-source and validate it on the bench now, before you lock the BOM. The strongest second source for the C61-MINI from a design-reuse standpoint is the U-blox NINA-W15 (Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth LE 5.3, same module form factor class), and from a cost-standpoint the Quectel FCM365X (multi-protocol, NXP silicon). Either is in stock at single-digit-week lead time at our Shenzhen warehouse. Document the swap in your design review and do not wait until Espressif is supply-constrained — at which point your second-source has the same lead time problem.

Step 6 — Order against the lead time, not the spot channel. Wi-Fi 6 modules in general are not in shortage, but specific lanes are. Dual-band (5 GHz) is allocation territory. Single-band (2.4 GHz) C61-MINI is shipping normally. The trap is that an EMS buyer who only checks the spot channel will see a $2 module and a $9 module both in stock — and if they buy to the lowest-priced SKU they will not see the 2 GHz/5 GHz distinction. Specify the radio lane in writing in your BOM line, not in a comment column.

Step 7 — Plan the Q1 2027 ramp order now. Espressif's own Q3 2026 guidance, inferred from the buyback pace and the S31 mass-production timing, points to a clean Q1 2027 for both module families. Industrial teams building a 12-month rolling forecast should have a 30-percent buffer in the Wi-Fi module lane through Q1 2027 — the same buffer you would have held for any other constrained 2.4 GHz component during a memory-driven cycle.

The C61-MINI landed in the $2-single-unit band as published, but volume pricing depends on allocation and reel availability that we are still building as of this writing. For the S31 dev kit, treat Hackster.io's $4.51 figure as the dev-kit starting reference, not the production module price — production modules carry a different price band that will not be firm until Espressif publishes a channel price letter in Q4 2026.
