What 1.5SMCJ8.5A is and what the voltage window means
The 1.5SMCJ8.5A is a unidirectional Zener-type TVS (transient voltage suppressor) in the DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package. It protects a sensitive rail by clamping above its standoff voltage — the 8.5 V typ reverse standoff rating is the working voltage the line normally sits at, and any spike that drives the line above the 9.4 V minimum breakdown threshold causes the device to avalanche and clamp the peak at 14.4 V max at the peak pulse current. That 8.5 V → 14.4 V window is what defines the protection headroom for the downstream circuitry. The corresponding 104.2 A peak pulse current tells you the short-circuit fault current the TVS must survive during the clamp event; the clamping voltage of 14.4 V at that current is the Let-through voltage the load sees.

Maximum junction temperature is 150 °C with a rated operating range from -50 °C to 150 °C (junction). In a sealed enclosure that runs warm, or in a point-of-load protection role downstream of a switching converter, the 150 °C ceiling gives reasonable headroom above typical panel ambient — but the clamping energy dissipation during a surge event can push the junction locally higher, so thermal pad mounting and board copper area matter for repeated transient duty.
