The 1.5SMCJ70C: The 70V reverse standoff is the working voltage the diode presents to the line in normal operation — transients above this level trigger the device into conduction.

Thermal headroom for surge absorption

Junction temperature range is -50°C to 150°C, which gives the diode substantial thermal margin for absorbing repetitive transients in industrial environments — a cold-start motor contactor surge or a lightning-induced spike on an outdoor signal line both push the junction above ambient. The 150°C ceiling governs the peak-pulse current derating curve; if the surge duty cycle is high, the design should check the thermal cumulative effect against this limit rather than relying on the peak-pulse headline number alone.

SMC package and surface-mount integration

The DO-214AB (SMC) package is the mid-power TVS form factor — larger than the SMA (DO-214AC) and smaller than the 5 kW parts that use a non-standard outline. Surface-mount orientation means the cathode band must be correctly identified before placement — the diode conducts in the forward direction below the standoff voltage and clamps in the reverse direction above breakdown.
