What the 1.5SMCJ13CA-AQ protects
The 1.5SMCJ13CA-AQ is a bidirectional Zener-based transient voltage suppressor in the DO-214AB (SMC) package, rated for automotive environments. A 13 V reverse standoff means the diode stays off the line during normal 12 V automotive operation; it only clamps when a transient pushes the rail above roughly 14.4 V. When it does clamp, the peak pulse current rating of 69.8 A at the 10/1000 µs wave shape means it absorbs a 1500 W surge without degradation — the kind of load dump or inductive kick the 12 V rail sees when a starter motor disengages.
Clamping ceiling and thermal margin
The maximum clamping voltage of 21.5 V at rated peak pulse current sets the downstream protected rail ceiling — the downstream circuitry must survive 21.5 V applied briefly without damage. The junction temperature limit of 150 °C with the automotive -50 °C lower bound gives wide thermal margin for under-hood deployments, but the clamping event is transient by definition — sustained overvoltage above the standoff will push the junction above that ceiling.
Automotive fit and sourcing
The strip packaging format is standard for SMC reel/tape; verify reel quant on the order to match your placement line.
