Clamping voltage — the protection floor
The 1.5SMCJ13CA: The 1.5 kW peak pulse rating defines what the part handles during the transient event — not continuous dissipation, but the single-shot energy of a surge that might last microseconds. Board-level designers route the clamping path tight to the protected node so the loop inductance does not allow the voltage spike to overshoot before the TVS responds.
Operating temperature and what it permits
The junction temperature ceiling of 150 °C with a low-end of −50 °C gives the part headroom for automotive under-hood environments and industrial enclosures that run hot. The SMC/DO-214AB package relies on the board copper pad for thermal sinking — the datasheet thermal impedance curve determines how much copper island the layout needs to hold the junction below 150 °C at the expected surge duty. Bidirectional operation (, single channel) means it clamps both polarities without a polarity mark — suitable for AC rails, RS-485 bus lines, and any node where the transient can swing both ways. For a unidirectional protection path the unipolar series would be the right fit.
