Product details

1.5 kW surge clamp for 14 V rails

The SMCJ14A-13 is a 1500 W (1.5 kW) unidirectional Zener TVS diode from Diodes Incorporated, designed to clamp transient overvoltage events on a 14 V nominal DC rail. The 14 V reverse standoff voltage is the maximum continuous DC voltage the device can block without conducting — this matches a standard 12 V automotive battery bus or a 14 V regulated supply. When the line voltage exceeds 15.6 V, the TVS enters avalanche breakdown and begins clamping. This is a unidirectional device — it clamps only in one polarity. For bidirectional protection on AC or bipolar rails, two devices in anti-series or a dedicated bidirectional TVS is required. The device is not rated for power line protection, meaning it is intended for signal and DC power bus transient suppression, not for AC mains primary protection.

Frequently asked questions

Is SMCJ14A-13 suitable for 12 V automotive battery protection?

Yes. The 14 V reverse standoff voltage matches a nominal 12 V automotive battery bus. The device begins clamping at 15.6 V minimum breakdown, providing margin above the normal battery voltage range while clamping load-dump and other transients to 23.2 V maximum.
